What are carpet tiles?/Pros & cons of carpet tiles

Let us go through some of the FAQs related to carpet tiles as follows.

1. What are carpet tiles?

Carpet tiles are pre-cut pieces of carpets in various shapes. They are glued to the existing flooring base to make carpet tile flooring.

2. What are carpet tiles made of?

Carpet tile is made of a composite of various materials layered over one another.

Nylon is the most common material used in making carpet tiles. Nylon is preferred as they have good resistance to wear & tear.

The other materials used in layers are wool, vinyl, polypropylene, FRP, rubber, & recycled polyester.

3. What are the advantages & disadvantages of carpet tiles?

Advantages:

1. Easy to install:

A non-skilled person can install carpet tiles easily without much hassle. They are DIY-type materials to work with.

2. Protection:

If any electronic gadgets or materials fall by accident, these tiles are good at protecting them from any damage. Carpet tiles act like a cushion, due to their rubber base & a soft top layer of nylon material.

3. Soft to walk:

They provide a comfortable feeling while walking over them & reduces the sound effect of the moving traffic.

4. Huge option:

Carpet tiles are available in a wide variety of patterns, colors, designs, & shapes. You can choose according to your purpose & match it with the interior architecture.

5. Less wear & tear:

They are made of durable materials & they do not degrade easily.

6. Basic maintenance:

Carpet tiles only need a vacuum cleaning at regular intervals to keep them fresh.

7. Replaceable:

Any cut or damaged part of the flooring is easily replaceable & this job does not demand a skilled worker.

Disadvantages:

1. Edge popup:

If the glue is not spread properly, the individual tile edge may pop up after some time.

2. Need vacuum cleaner:

We need a vacuum cleaner as an extra tool to keep them clean by sucking the dust particles. If you don't have a vacuum cleaner, you have to pay extra in your flooring budget to purchase one.

3. Suitability:

These tiles are not good to install in such floor areas which have seepage or dampness. Carpet tiles are not suitable in water-prone areas such as the kitchen floor, the bottom of the wash basin or sink, the exterior balcony, etc.

4. Non-uniform:

The color of all the carpet tiles may be non-uniform & may not be super perfect when you match them with one another.

4. Why choose carpet tiles instead of the whole carpet?

Following are the 3 reasons to go for carpet tiles rather than whole carpets.

1. If a part of the carpet flooring gets damaged, we can easily replace those portions by lifting them.

In the case of whole carpets, cutting & installing those damaged patches is a tedious job. The patched part does not match the original material & looks different.

2. We can install carpet tiles in any required pattern that gives rich look to the room. But, the whole carpet comes in a pre-designed look that cannot be altered.

3. When we install carpet tiles, the wastage will be in the range of 1 -2%.  We can fix these tiles to cover all the parts of the existing floor & skirting area.

But, the availability of the whole carpet as per your defined room area is difficult, which adds up to more wastage in its cutting & finishing.

5. What are the dimensions of carpet tiles?

We cannot define the dimensions of carpet tiles as they are available in all possible shapes. Square & rectangular were the most common shapes in the earlier days.

But, as you can observe in the above fig., L-shape, hexagonal, trihex, dumble, etc. have become the latest trends. Nowadays, carpet tiles are manufactured similarly to the shapes of concrete paver blocks.

However, the thickness of carpet tiles ranges between 6mm - 10mm.

6. What is the installation cost of carpet tiles?

Cost of standard carpet tiles 👉   INR 70/- to INR100/- per sq. ft.

Installation cost inclusive of material, labor, & glue  👉  INR120/- to INR150/- per sq. ft.
