Eg:
Calculate the void ratio & dry density for the following given data.
The porosity of soil sample = 28%, specific gravity = 2.65.
Calculation:
Given data:
Porosity = η = 28% = 0.28
Specific gravity = G = 2.65
To find:
Void ratio = e =?
Dry density = 𝞎d =?
1. Void ratio:
e = [η ÷ (1 - η)]
= [0.28 ÷ (1 - 0.28)]
= [0.28 ÷ 0.72]
= 0.39
Void ratio = e = 0.39
2. Dry density:
𝞎d = [(𝞎w × G) ÷ (1 + e )]
Where,
𝞎w = density of water = 1000
𝞎d = [(1000 × 2.65) ÷ (1 + 0.39)]
= [ 2650 ÷ 1.39]
= 1906.47 kg/m³
Dry density = 𝞎d = 1906.47 kg/m³
Thank you for going through these calculation steps❤. Have a good day 😄.
