How to calculate the actual length of the chain in surveying?/ Calculating the true length of the chain in surveying.

 Eg:

The length of the survey line measured with a 30m. chain was recorded as 767m. If the true length of the line is 770m., calculate the actual length of the chain.

Calculation:

    D = actual length of the line = 770m.

  D1 = measured length of the line = 767m.

    L = designated length of the chain = 30m.

   The actual length of the chain = L1 =?

Now,

   D = [ D1 × ( L1 ÷ L )]

770m. = [767m. × ( L1 ÷ 30m. )]

770m. = [25.56667  × L1]

Therefore,

The true length of the chain

     L1 = [ 770m. ÷ 25.56667]

    L1 = 30.117m.
