How to calculate the effective cover & effective depth of a cantilever beam?/What is effective cover & effective depth in cantilever beam?

Let us calculate the effective cover & effective depth of the RCC cantilever beam as shown below.

Given data:

Beam depth = 450mm.

Clear cover = 25mm.

Dia. of stirrup bar = 8mm.

Dia. of bottom bar = 12mm.

Dia. of top bar = 16mm.

To understand what is effective cover & effective depth in the cantilever beam, let us observe the drawing as shown below.

Calculation:

1. Effective depth:

According to IS-456:2000, the effective depth is defined as given below.

In cantilever beams, the top bars act as tension reinforcements. The bottom surface of the beam is the last end of the compression fiber.

The effective depth

= [beam depth - (clear cover +dia of stirrup bar + 1/2 dia of top rebar)]

   = [450mm. - ( 25mm. + 8mm. + 1/2 × 16mm.)]

    = [ 450mm. - 41mm]

    = 409mm.

  2. Effective cover:

The effective cover

= [beam depth - effective depth]

    = [450mm - 409mm.]

   = 41mm.

or

Effective cover

= [clear cover +stirrup dia. + 1/2 dia of the top bar]

  = [ 25mm. + 8mm. + 1/2 × 16mm.]

  = 41mm.
