How to calculate the effective cover & effective depth of a simply supported beam?/What is effective cover & effective depth of a beam?

Let us calculate the effective cover & effective depth of the RCC beam as shown below.

Given data:

Beam depth = 450mm.

Beam width =230mm.

Clear cover = 25mm.

Dia. of stirrup bar = 8mm.

Dia. of bottom bar = 20mm.

To understand what is effective cover & effective depth, let us observe the drawing as shown below.

Calculation:

1. Effective depth:

According to IS-456:2000, the effective depth is defined as given below.

The effective depth

= [beam depth - (clear cover +dia of stirrup bar + 1/2 dia of bottom rebar)]

   = [450mm. - ( 25mm. + 8mm. + 1/2 × 20mm.)]

    = [ 450mm. - 43mm]

    = 407mm.

  2. Effective cover:

The effective cover

= [beam depth - effective depth]

    = [450mm - 407mm.]

   = 43mm.

or

Effective cover

= [clear cover +stirrup dia. + 1/2 dia of the bottom bar]

  = [ 25mm. + 8mm. + 1/2 × 20mm.]

  = 43mm.

Now, my question to you is,

What will be the effective cover of the beam having double-layered bottom rebars?

The effective cover won't change & it will remain the same as shown below.

Here, the effective cover = 43mm.
