Let us find the height of a building using stones & a stopwatch as given below.
Let us drop 3nos. of stone from the top of the building & note down the time taken by the stone to hit the ground. Let us use a stopwatch to note down the time in seconds.

Given data:
Average time = t = 5.7 sec.
Acceleration due to gravity = g = 9.81m./sec2
The initial velocity of stone = v = 0 m /sec.
Height of building = h =?
Note:
Initially, the stone was in the person's hand, so the initial velocity v = 0 m/sec.
By using the 2nd equation of motion,
Height of the building
h = [(v × t ) + ( 0.5 × g × t2 )]
= [(0 × 5.7 sec) + ( 0.5 × 9.81 × 5.72)]
= [ 0 + 159.36 ]
= 159.36 m.
Note:
1. According to the law of gravity, whatever might be the size of the stone, it takes the same amount of time to hit the ground.
2. Use round-shaped stones without voids in them to minimize air pressure acting over the stone.
3. When you drop a stone, it always falls in a straight line with uniform acceleration.
4. This is an approximate method to calculate the height of the building.
