How to calculate the materials required for modular brickworks?/ Brick, cement, & sand calculations for modular brick masonry.

Let us consider a modular brick wall of size 1.667m. × 3m.× 200mm. as shown in the drawing.

Now, we will build this wall with a modular brick of size 190mm. × 90mm. × 90mm. as shown in the image below.

Given data:

Length of the brick wall = 1.667m.

Height of the brick wall = 3m.

The thickness of the brick wall = 200mm. = 0.20m.

Brick size = 190mm. × 90mm. × 90mm.

Mortar thickness = 10mm = 0.39 inches.

To calculate the number of bricks required to build this wall, first, we will find out the volume of the wall and the volume of a single brick with or without mortar.

The volume of the brick wall

                  = [Length × Height × Thickness]

                  = [1.667m. × 3m. × 0.2m.]

                  = 1 cum.

Now, the volume of the modular brick

                 = [ length × height × thickness]

                 = [190mm. × 90mm. × 90mm.]

( By converting them into m.)

                 = [0.19m. × 0.09m. × 0.09m.]

                 =0.001539cum.

From the drawing given below, you can observe that the addition of the mortar thickness comes on the 3 sides of every brick. I have denoted them with nos. 1, 2, & 3.

So, the volume of the brick with mortar

                     = [200mm. ×100mm. × 100mm.]

                     =[ 0.2m × 0.1m. × 0.1m.

                     =0.002 cum.

1.  The number of bricks required

= [volume of the wall ÷ volume of the brick with mortar]

                  = [1cum ÷ 0.002cum.]

                  = 500 nos.

The volume of mortar required

= [volume of the brick wall - ( the volume of the total no. of bricks )]

        = [1 cum. - (500 nos. × 0.001539 cum.)]

        =   [1cum. - 0.7695 cum.]

           =0.2305 cum

Let us prepare this 0.2305 cum. of mortar in a 1: 6 ratio to build this 1 cum. of the brick wall.

Dry volume of the cement mortar

= 1.33 × wet volume of the mortar.

          = 1.33 × 0.2305

           = 0.30656 cum.

   2.  Volume of the sand

         = [{its ratio  ÷ ( total ratio)} × dry mortar vol.]

          = [{6  ÷ ( 6 + 1)} × 0.30656]

           = [0.8571 × 0.30656]

            = 0.2628 cum.   or

          = 9.28 cu ft.

3. Volume of the cement

= total dry mortar vol. - the volume of sand

    = 0.30656 cum. - 0.2628 cum.

    =0.04376 cum.

As you know, one bag of cement = 1.226 cu ft.

  Number of cement bags

    = [(0.04376 × 35.3147 )÷ 1.226 cu ft.]

    = [1.5454 cu ft.÷ 1.226 cu ft.]

    =   1.261 bags.

Let us now find out the materials required for 1 cu ft. of a modular brick wall.

1. Bricks:

Bricks required for 1 cu ft. of brick wall

= 500 nos. ÷ 35.3147

14.158 nos.

2. Cement:

Cement required for 1 cu ft. of brick wall

= 1.261 bags. ÷ 35.3147

0.0357 bags.

3. Sand:

Sand required for 1 cu ft. of brick wall

= 0.2628 cum. ÷ 35.3147

0.0074 cum. or

 = 0.26 cu ft.

Note: 1cum = 35.3147 cu ft.
