What is a paper joint in tile fixing? - advantages & disadvantages./What is Paper joint in construction?

When the tiles are fixed without any gaps in between them, it is called a paper joint type of tile flooring.

The word 'paper' is used because the gap between the two fixed tiles is equal to the thickness of the paper.

In other words, you cannot pass anything thicker than paper in between the tile joints before grouting.

Advantages:

1. Less grouting material:

When compared to the spacer joint type of tile fixing, the material required for grouting the tile joints is minimal.

2. Easy availability of workers:

Masons required to work with a paper joint type of tile flooring are easily available. It does not require, trained or highly skilled workers to finish the job.

3. Saves time:

The time required to fix the tiles is less, as it does not involve any skilled workmanship. You have to fix the tiles attached to one another, without any complexity of checking the line & level between the joints.

4. Economical:

An ordinary mason can complete the tile work within very little time. We can save on the labor cost as well as on the grouting material, and hence it is economical.

Disadvantages:

1. Difficulty in repairing:

If any single tile breaks or gets damaged in the future, it is difficult to replace that particular tile as there is no gap between the flooring, to lift that individual tile. The adjacent tiles get damaged in the repairing process, which also needs replacement, adding an extra amount to your budget.

2. Floor surface level:

The tiles brought from the market may contain defective tiles having a minute difference in their thicknesses. As there are no joints between the tiles, we cannot adjust & maintain the top surface level or to say, the minute ups and downs can be felt at the joint part of the tile flooring.

3. Variation in joints:

If the tiles have a variation in their edges, the joint part at that defective area makes their presence felt, to disturb the appearance of the flooring. When there is no gap between the two tiles, a sudden variation in the joint thickness takes in more grout, creating an unwanted thick line of grout at the joints.
