Milestones are flat-painted items, made of stone or RCC, that are installed on the sides of the road, to indicate the distance between two or more destinations.
You might have observed that these milestones are painted in different colors over the upper strip and the lower portion is painted in white colors.
Now, let us observe the different colored milestones & the meaning of their color codes.
1. Yellow stripe :
The yellow stripe over the milestone indicates that you are on the National Highway. These are the main roads that connect the different states and cities of India. The central government builds and takes care of such roads.
2. Green stripe:
The green stripe represents the state highways. These are the roads that connect intrastate cities and adjoining states. State highways are maintained and constructed by the state governments.
3. Black, blue, or white stripe :
These color codes indicate the district roads & city roads connecting adjoining districts and the intracity of that district. These roads are maintained by the district authority & city administration.
