How to calculate the weight of hollow square steel section.

If you are looking for a readymade calculator, then click here.

For the calculation procedure, go through the following steps.👇

 Let us consider a hollow mild steel square section ( tube or pipe) of dimension 50mm × 50mm.× 2mm. as shown in the drawing below. Let us take a pipe of 1meter length.

Hollow mild steel square section

Given data:

 Thickness = T = 2mm.

 Breadth = B = 50mm

 Length = L =1m.

Hollow steel square tube.

First, we will calculate the sectional area in two parts, the orange-colored part area as A1, and green colored part area as A2.

Area A1 = [ Breadth( B) × Thickness (T) × 2nos.]
               = [ 50mm × 2mm. × 2nos.]

 By converting mm. unit into meters, we get

          A1 = [0.05 × 0.002 × 2]

          A1 = 0.0002 m²

Area A2  =[ { B - ( 2 × T )} × T × 2 nos]

                = [{50 mm. - ( 2 × 2mm. )} × 2mm. × 2 nos]

                =[ 46 mm. × 2mm. × 2nos.]

                = [0.046 × 0.002 × 2]

           A2 = 0.000184 m²

Now, the total sectional area

        A  = [ A1 +A2]

             = [0.0002 +0.000184]

             = 0.000384 m²

As you know,

   volume V = [ area × length ]

                    = [ A  × L ]

                    = [ 0.000384 m² × 1m. ]

                V =  0.000384 m³

The density of mild steel is 7850 kg./m³

So, the weight of the hollow square MS tube

                              = [volume × density]

                              = [0.000384 × 7850]

                              = 3.014 kg.

          Alternate method:

First, we will calculate the total area inclusive of the hollow part, and then we will deduct the pipe's inner hollow portion (shown in brown color).

Area a1   = [B × B]

               = [50mm. × 50mm.]

 By converting mm. unit into meters, we get

         a1 = [0.05 × 0.05]

         a1 = 0.0025  m²

Area a2 =  [46mm.× 46 mm.]

              ( i.e. inner hollow part )

               = [0.046  ×0.046]

             a2 = 0.002116  m²

Now,

    the total sectional area

             A = [a1 - a2]

                = [ 0.0025 - 0.002116]

            A = 0.000384  m²

Note: We got the same area (A ) as calculated before.

Volume = [0.00384 m² × 1m.]

            V =  0.000384 m³

So, the weight of the hollow square MS tube

                              = [volume × density]

                              = [0.000384 × 7850]

                              = 3.014 kg.

Thank you for going through this calculation😃.
