The washbasin or wash sink is broadly classified under the following 4 sections.
A. Washbasin based on the materials used.
B. Washbasin based on the shape.
C. Washbasin based on the models, design, and purpose.
D. Washbasin based on its position.
Now, we will observe the different types of washbasins or sinks, that come under each of these categories.
A. Washbasin based on the materials used.
1. Ceramic washbasin:
2. Granite washbasin:
Granite is the hardest of all the stones that are used in making washbasins. You can use them to match the countertop, by using the same granite material.
3. Marble washbasin:
Marble washbasins are good for the bowl-like basin over the tabletop. They are carved and polished, providing a smooth and shiny surface.
4. Solid surface washbasin:
They are manufactured using resins with different filler materials and colors. Solid surface washbasins are seamless, scratch-resistant washbasins, that come in stylish patterns.
5. FRP washbasin:
These composite plastics are versatile in design, as they can be injected in any type of mold to have a washbasin of different curvatures. This type of washbasin comes in a variety of colors.
6. Acrylic washbasin:
Acrylic is a transparent thermoplastic, having good strength and stiffness. They can be created by having different design patterns in them. Acrylic washbasins are available in mixed colors and shades.
7. Stainless steel washbasin:
8. Glass washbasin:
This glass washbasin gives a royal look to your bathroom as they are one of the rare kinds in this category. The glass is thick but still needs careful handling.
9. Copper washbasin:
10. Porcelain washbasin:
Porcelain is made up of fire clay material similar to ceramic, but here, kaolin clay is used in the manufacturing process. The surface of the washbasin is vitrified having printed designs over them.
B. Washbasin based on the shape.
1. Rectangular washbasin:
Here, the length is more when compared to the width, which minimizes the splashing of water on either end. The basin corner may be curved, sharp, or in oval shape depending upon the manufactured material and its design purpose.
2. Round washbasin:
The round shape makes these washbasins cover less area when compared to other shapes. These types of washbasins are available in different diameters with varying depths.
3. Oval washbasin:
These oval washbasins are made of a different curvature at the outer periphery to provide an elongated look.4. Egg-shaped washbasin:
As you can see in fig., the washbasin looks like a half-cut eggshell, with a drain hole at the center.
5. Leaf-shaped washbasin:
Leaf-like curvature is given to the periphery of the basin, having different dimensions with varied curvature angles.
6. Square washbasin:
The length and width are the same giving a square look to the basin. The corner may be rounded, tapered, or diagonal, depending on the model and the material used.
C. Washbasin based on the models, design, and purpose.
1. Pedestal washbasin:
The pedestal is provided to cover the plumbing fixtures which otherwise spoil the room's appearance as in the case of the wall-hung washbasin. The pedestal may come in separate parts, and the washbasin that comes in a single piece with a pedestal is marketed as an integrated pedestal basin.
2. Semi-pedestal washbasin:
When the plumbing pipeline is drilled through the near bottom of the basin, the semi-pedestal type is chosen to cover the plumbing and hold the washbasin from its bottom.
3. Cabinet washbasin:
The basin is supported over the cabinet, where you can use this space, to place all your bathroom accessories like toothpaste, brush, soap, etc.
D. Washbasin based on its position.
1. Tabletop washbasin:
As the name suggests, the washbasin is positioned over the top of the table.
2. Under-mount washbasin:
Here, the washbasin is mounted beneath the surface of the countertop. There will be a clear edge line between these two materials.
3. Corner washbasin:
These are the basin that is positioned at the two wall corners. This type of basin saves space by covering a little corner area.
4. Washstand basin:
As you can see in fig., the basin is supported over the steel stand that can be screwed to the wall. No extra brackets are required, as the stand itself gives good support.
5. Semi-inset washbasin:
Here, the basin is half pushed inside the cuttings and the upper half rests over the countertop carved edge.
6. Semi-recessed washbasin:
The front part of the basin is in the offset position from the holding counter edge.
7. Wall-mount washbasin:
These are the most common type of washbasin that is mostly used in all public and commercial buildings. The basin is rested over the brackets, which are nailed to the wall at the bottom.
