All about civil construction knowledge- PARAM VISIONS

Different types of pointing in civil construction./Various types of masonry pointing.

Now let us have a look over the different types of pointings, used in civil construction.

1.   Flush pointing:

As the name suggests, here, the mortar is flushed to the wall surface. The edges are neatly scrapped and trimmed. This type of pointing gives good bonding strength.

2.   Keyed pointing:

They are also said by name rubbed pointing. As you can see in the fig., a groove is formed in the pointing work, which gives a good look to the building.

3.   V-grooved pointing:

As you can see in the fig. below, here the groove provided is in a v-shape.

4. Cut pointing:

The mortar is filled in the joints, and the top of the horizontal is pressed inside.

5.  Tuck pointing:

After pressing the mortar, a narrow channel is created at the center having 5mm. width and 3mm. depth, where white cement putty is used as a raw material.

6.  Beaded pointing:

They are concave in shape, bulging outside as you can see in the fig. below.

7.  Recessed pointing:

Here the mortar is pushed inside and finished vertically to the wall surface by about 5-6mm. depth.

8.  Stuck pointing:

The face of the pointing is kept inclined, so that water drains easily.

Note:   I have not discussed them in detail as the figures shown are self-explanatory.

All these types of pointing are used according to the type of building block used, different climatic conditions, and also to fit into the chosen aesthetic look.
